ESL Pricing in 2026: Real Numbers Instead of Vague Quotes

Why ESL vendors won’t list prices

Try asking SoluM, Vusion, Hanshow, or Pricer for a sticker price. You won’t get one. The standard response is “depends on volume and configuration” — which is true, but it’s also a stalling tactic that puts you on the sales-cycle treadmill.

Real pricing is more transparent than they let on. Here are the ranges most US retailers actually pay in 2026, broken down by hardware tier. These come from our own quoting plus public RFP responses we’ve seen.

Six advantages of electronic shelf labels

BWR / BWRY ESL hardware (per unit, in quantity)

Size Color tier Per-label range (USD, qty 1,000+)
1.5″–2.2″ BW (black/white only) $3.50 – $6.00
2.6″–2.9″ BWR (3-color) $6.00 – $10.00
2.6″–2.9″ BWRY (4-color) $8.00 – $14.00
3.5″–4.2″ BWRY $11.00 – $18.00
5.8″–7.5″ BWRY $22.00 – $40.00
10.2″–13.3″ BWRY $60.00 – $120.00

Spectra 6 (six-color) ESLs run roughly 1.5-2× the BWRY price for the same size. Wired LCD shelf-edge bars (Hanshow Lumina Edge equivalents) run $200-450 per unit depending on length.

Electronic pricing labels and the future of retail

What drives variance within the range

  • Quantity tier: qty 100 might be 50% above qty 10,000. The discount curve flattens after ~5,000 units.
  • Brand: SoluM and Pricer typically anchor the high end. Vusion is mid-to-high. Hanshow and ZKong tend mid-to-low. The hardware quality differences between brands at this point are minor; pricing reflects sales/marketing overhead more than build cost.
  • Color tier: BW → BWR adds ~$2-3. BWR → BWRY adds another $2-4. BWRY → Spectra 6 roughly doubles the price.
  • NFC support: +$0.50 to $1.00 per unit if specified.
  • Freezer rating: +$2-4 per unit for -25 °C operation.

Gateway pricing

Gateways (the wireless hubs that relay content from cloud to ESLs) run roughly $200-500 each across all brands. Most stores need 1-3 of them depending on square footage and racking. See our gateway placement guide for sizing.

Powerful tool for boosting sales efficiency

Cloud platform fees

This is where pricing differs more significantly:

  • SoluM SSP: typically license per ESL deployed, ~$1-2/year per label.
  • Vusion VusionLive: tiered subscription based on store count + label count. Ballpark $0.80-1.50/year per label.
  • Hanshow All Star Platform: similar to Vusion, ~$0.80-1.50/year per label.
  • Pricer Plaza: typically priced per store + per-label tier.
  • ZKong cloud (via Retail Digitals): flat per-store annual fee structure rather than per-label scaling.

For a 30,000-label single store, the annual cloud platform fee usually lands somewhere between $5,000 and $25,000 depending on brand and tier.

Total cost example: 50-store chain, 30,000 labels each

Let’s walk through a representative scope: 50 stores × 30,000 BWRY labels at average $9 each = $13.5M hardware. Add ~$5K in gateways per store ($250K total). Cloud platform fees at $1/year per label across 1.5M labels = $1.5M/year ongoing.

Year-1 total: ~$15.25M hardware + setup. Then ~$1.5M/year ongoing.

Compare to ongoing paper-tag costs the chain replaces: roughly $40K/store/year in labor + materials × 50 stores = $2M/year saved. Plus eliminated pricing-error fines (state-dependent, often $50-200K/year for a chain this size). Payback typically 12-24 months.

How to ask for a real quote

When you ask any vendor (us included), give them three specific numbers and you’ll get a real number back:

  • Total label count and split by size + color tier
  • Number of stores and approximate sq ft each
  • Existing POS/ERP system you need integration with

Without those, every quote is a placeholder. With them, you’ll get pricing within 24 hours from any reputable vendor.
